Have a Non-toxic Home!

If you follow me on Instagram, you know that’s a topic I love mentioning. I’ve now even created a second account that is only home and cleaning related, so if that’s something you’re interested in, make sure you check it out!

As I’ve mentioned before, it all started when once I was cleaning my kitchen with a popular surface spray and nearly suffocated, kept coughing for a few hours and decided to actually start reading labels.

Guess what? Pretty much every popular brand you use is extremely harmful to you or to the environment. If you don’t believe me, just check the back of your laundry liquid, where it likely says “Harmful to aquatic life with lasting effects”. Pretty grim, eh?

Luckily, there are plenty of alternatives on the market and so far I cannot say that any of them are worse than the generic cleaning products most of us use. On the contrary, most of them I find a lot more efficient.

I’ve already mentioned the laundry, so let’s start with that. For about two years now I’ve been using Method’s liquid laundry detergent and I can’t find a single reason to change it – washes well, smells good, plenty of scent options!

In regards to fabric softener – I’ve tried Method’s and Ecover’s – both absolutely lovely, I can’t really pick a favourite!

Kitchen spray – Method’s spray is an absolute winner here, I prefer it to any other cleaning product for greasy and sticky surfaces. I might have even hooked up some of our friends and they agree completely with that. Has a very subtle scent, so doesn’t incinerate your airways when using it.

Surface spray, wood polish, stainless steel spray and floor cleaner – Method wins again. As a bonus, they all smell absolutely amazing!

Bathroom spray – just spray, wipe and you’re done. There’s no need to rinse and it works wonders on the shower glass. The water where we live also creates ridiculous …. Build ups, but the spray battles them very efficiently! Sure, if you’ve left the surfaces for months and you’ve got an inch of build up, then soak it in Viakal (and open widows and wear a mask!!!), but as long as you keep on top with regular cleaning, you’re fine!

Speaking of bathrooms – the Daily Shower spray is something quite handy as well, if you’re organised enough to spray the glass every time after showering ( I have to admit, I’m not…) – it does prevent soap marks and build up and makes deep cleans needed less often.

Other products – I’ve substituted as well the washing up liquid for the dishes and the hand soap, as those are obviously in contact with your skin and the plates you put your food on.

Same goes for dishwashing tablets (the Ecozone ones I find better than the Ecover and I’m now going to test a new brand as well).

I’m happy to report that the Ecover stain remover works very well too, although I’ve only had the chance to test it on some lovely ketchup stains down my husband’s new pale blue sweater – they’re completely gone after just one treatment and wash!

It’s very important to mention as well that Method’s packaging is fully recyclable (including the pumps) and many of the products can be refilled, which reduces the plastic waste as well

If you’re using any eco friendly or toxin-free products in your house, please share them with me, I’m always up to trying something new. Also, if you do decide to give some of my recommendations a go, let me know how you get on!

Hope you’ve found this little summary helpful – off we go to clean now 🙂
